TAHLEQUAH — The Tahlequah softball team qualified for the 5A Fast Pitch Softball State Tournament after defeating Coweta 5-1 Thursday evening at the Lady Tigers Softball Field.

The clash of the two Tigers was the “if necessary” championship game of the Class 5A Regional 6 Tournament.

“Qualifying for the state tournament is always a special honor, because it shows you are one of the best teams in 5A,” Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud said.

“This is something we are not going to take for granted.”

The Tahlequah Lady Tigers (36-4) won their first two contests over Edison Prep and Coweta Wednesday, but the Coweta Lady Tigers came back from the loser’s bracket to defeat Tahlequah 1-0 in 12 innings Thursday afternoon to force the decisive final contest.

In the final game of the tournament, Tahlequah was led by Randee O’Donnell, Bub Peters and Lainey Wallace at the plate.

All three had two hits, while O’Donnell was able to drive home two and Wallace scored twice. Morgan Tarrance pitched all seven innings and struck out three in the winning effort. She only conceded two walks and one run.

Coweta outhit Tahlequah 10-8, but the home Tigers were able to make those baserunners count.

“We pitched great and we played great defense throughout the entire regional,” Cloud said.

“This will be the fourth-straight state tournament for our seniors. We are always excited to be able to play for the state title, but at the same time there is still some unfinished business.”

Tahlequah will now move on to Shawnee for the state championship tournament.

The bracket for the state tournament is scheduled to be announced early next week, Cloud said.
