Tahlequah claims tournament title

Marisa Girdner went two-for-four and drove in the go-ahead run as Tahlequah rallied to beat Piedmont, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Lady Tiger Field. With the victory, Tahlequah claimed first place in the inaugural Tahlequah/Northeastern State University tournament.

Girdner's bunt single in the fifth inning brought home Bub Peters, who tied the game earlier in the frame on a triple to center field. Girdner also scored in the fifth inning, advancing to third on a throwing error by Piedmont third baseman Michelle Brandon and scoring on Whitney Wright's ground out to short.

Piedmont (5-3) — who lost three times in the tournament, twice to Tahlequah — took an early lead on Madison Morris' RBI double in the fourth inning.

Tahlequah (13-0) would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Lindsay Wade hit a two-out triple and scored when Lainey Wallace reached on a throwing error by Piedmont second baseman Logan Simunek.

Narrowing the deficit late in the contest, Piedmont scored two runs in the seventh inning on Jamie Lowrie's double to center field. However, Lowrie was caught in a rundown between first and second base and tagged out.

With two outs and Tahlequah leading 4-3 in the seventh inning, Brandon walked for Piedmont, and Bre Davis — a Central Oklahoma commit — came to the plate as the winning run. Davis, though, grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Picking up the victory for Tahlequah in the pitching circle was Wade, who lasted 6 1/3 innings before giving way to Tarrance. Wade allowed two earned runs on five hits while also striking out three and walking two.

Tarrance allowed a run on two hits and a walk, but did manage to pick up the save.

Piedmont's Kassidy Scott was tagged with the loss. The sophomore hurler gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Tahlequah will be back in action Tuesday at Skiatook in District 5A-3 play. Piedmont will host El Reno in 5A-1 on Monday.
