5 local wrestlers reach state semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tahlequah sent two while Sequoyah, Keys and Hulbert sent one wrestler each into the semifinals of the state tournament on Friday.

For Tahlequah, Mitch Sellers — the No. 4 seed out of the east side — upset Del City’s Gavin Millhouse, 2-0, in the first round. Sellers will now take on Pryor’s Kelvin Grubbs in the semifinals tonight. Sellers is 1-2 against Grubbs this season, including a one-point loss to Grubbs in the regional semifinals last week.

Tahlequah’s other semifinalist is Hestin Lamons at 152. Lamons posted a major-decision victory, 11-1, over El Reno’s Elisha Leonard. Lamons’ next opponent will be Shawnee’s Matt Daniel.

Two Tahlequah wreslters — Zech VanFleet (132) and Reese Davis (160) — lost in the championship quarterfinals. VanFleet dropped a 13-0 major decision to Lawton MacArthur’s Colby Powers, and Davis — who was coming off a regional title — lost by fall to Lawton MacArthur’s Colton Jump at 4:37.

Both VanFleet and Davis will wrestle in the consolation quarterfinals tonight.

For Keys, Sequoyah and Hulbert, is was an unblemished afternoon at State Fair Arena. Each club took one wrestler to the state tournament and all three had their wrestlers advance.

Sequoyah’s Will Tiger wrestled before the noon hour and posted a 9-2 win over Perry’s Zane Johnson. Tiger’s next opponent is Madill’s Rio Zamora.

In his second straight state tournament, Keys’ Seth Fritts came up with a victory by fall over Quinton’s Peyton Knell at 3:10. It was Fritts’ third time to beat Knell this season.

Fritts will take on Perry’s David Thomas in the semifinals.

The final area semifinalist is Hulbert’s Bryson McGowan (220), who pinned Madill’s Judge Hartin at 4:33. Next up for McGowan is Plainview’s Cameron Hanan.
