SLOWPITCH STATE: Tahlequah, Sequoyah reach semifinals

SHAWNEE — Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud lost the coin flip and his team went to work.

Class 6A No. 2 Tahlequah posted 11 first-inning runs and went on to coast to a 16-2 blowout of third-ranked Westmoore in five innings of the state tournament on Tuesday at the Ballfields at Firelake.

Randee O'Donnell's walk to start the first inning started the snowball that became Westmoore's undoing. O'Donnell and Kirsten Chase both scored on Whitney Wright's single to left field, and Kortney Dry followed with a two-run home run to left field.

But Tahlequah wasn't done.

Bub Peters and Lindsay Wade both flew out, but Lainey Wallace and Caitlin Chuculate both singled before Erin Dillard walked. Marisa Girdner then hit an infield single to third base, scoring Wallace on a slow roller down the line.

That set the table for O'Donnell, who clubbed a grand slam over the left-field fence.

Tahlequah's nine-run lead was short-lived when Chase smacked a solo home run.

Wright followed with a single and later scored on Dry's run-scoring single.

Before Westmoore stepped to the plate, Tahlequah led 11-0.

The game was never close from that point on.

Dry finished three-for-three with four runs batted in, and O'Donnell was two-for-three with two runs scored and five runs batted in.

To cap things off, Chase hit a three-run home run to impose the run rule in the fifth inning.

Westmoore scored single runs in both the second and third frames.

Tahlequah's win over the Jaguars atoned for an 8-2 loss earlier in the season.

Tahlequah will take on either Southmoore or Muskogee in the championship game at 7.

First round

Tahlequah 10, Tecumseh 1

Tahlequah struck early and often and blew out Tecumseh 10-1 in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday.

Tahlequah jolted 15 hits and scored in every inning but the fifth.

Dry put Tahlequah in front for good with a two-run home run in the first inning. Dry finished three-for-three with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Tahlequah padded its lead in the second inning with three runs. Lainey Wallace scored on Caitlin Chuculate's triple down the right-field line, and Chuculate came across to score on Erin Dillard's sacrifice fly. O'Donnell, who doubled with two outs, scored on Chase's single to center field.

Hitting Tahlequah's second home run of the game, Bub Peters crushed a ball over the center-field wall to give the Lady Tigers a 7-0 advantage.

O'Donnell was Tahlequah's third player to drive in two runs.

Tecumseh didn't record a hit until the fifth inning on Bailey Smith's single to left field. Smith eventually scored Tecumseh's lone run on Franki Hill's sacrifice fly.

Tahlequah will take on Westmoore in the semifinals at 4.
