NSU men picked 4th in MIAA preseason poll

Northeastern State was a consensus pick by both Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association coaches and media members to finish fourth in the preseason basketball poll, which was released on Wednesday.

The RiverHawks picked up one first-place vote in both the coaches' and media polls, picking up 127 points in the coaches' poll and 296 points in the media poll.

Atop both polls is Fort Hays State, which barely edged out Northwest Missouri State in the coaches' poll. The Tigers picked up five first-place votes and 153 total points, compared to the Bearcats' six first-place votes and 149 points. In the media poll, Fort Hays State garnered 13 first-place votes and 353 points, while Northwest Missouri State had nine first-place votes and 330 points.

Central Missouri was the consensus third-place finisher in both polls.

In the coaches' poll, Northeastern State, Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern all picked up first-place votes. The Bronchos and Lions fall right behind the RiverHawks in the poll at fifth and sixth, respectively.

Rounding out the coaches' poll (from seven to 14) was: Washburn, Pittsburg State, Emporia State, Lindenwood, Missouri Western, Southwest Baptist, Nebraska Kearney and Lincoln.

The media poll had six teams with at least one first-place vote. After Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State, Central Missouri (picked third) nabbed two first-place votes, and Northeastern State recorded one. Same goes for Washburn (picked fifth) and Missouri Southern (picked ninth).

Central Oklahoma was picked sixth in the media poll followed (in order) by Pittsburg State, Lindenwood, Missouri Southern, Emporia State, Southwest Baptist, Missouri Western, Nebraska Kearney and Lincoln.

Northeastern State and Central Missouri were the lone representatives out of the MIAA in the NCAA tournament last season. Both were eliminated in the first round.

In last year's preseason poll, Northeastern State was picked to finish 14th.
