5A Track: Pair of silvers for Tahlequah girls

YUKON — Tahlequah's Jordan Roach eclipsed the 5-foot, 2-inch mark in the high jump and finished second in the event on the first day of the Class 5A state track meet in Yukon on Friday. Roach, who qualified for the state meet with a leap of 5-feet even at last weekend's regional, was second to Grove's Emilee Iverson, who won gold at 5 feet, 6 inches.

Jessica Hembree picked up Tahlequah's second silver of the day with a second-place performance in the 3,200-meter run. The Tahlequah senior finished with a time of 11:52.61, which was 36 seconds off of Michaela Werner's state-record pace of 11:16.75 for Grove.

Tahlequah's Gracie Medellin also medaled in the two-mile run at 12:15.99 to come in fourth.

By the end of the first day, Tahlequah had racked up 20 points and was sitting in third place. Grove, with 39 points, was the leader in the clubhouse with plenty of events to follow on Saturday.

The Tahlequah boys were in tie for fifth with 10 points. The Tigers picked up eight points when Brandon Conrad finished second in the high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches. McAlester's Zach Skimbo also finished at 6 feet, 6 inches but won gold based on numbers of attempts.

Tahlequah's 3,200-meter relay team came in sixth place, despite the Tigers leading through more than half of the race. At the end of the third run, Tahlequah's Ara Poteete fell to the track surface before being able to hand off the baton to Zech VanFleet. The delay cost the Tigers several places in the standings.
