Deer Creek beats East Central for 5A girls championship

TULSA — Dakota Vann had 17 points and 17 rebounds to help Deer Creek defeat Tulsa East Central 31-28 in overtime for the Class 5A girls state championship Saturday at the Mabee Center.

Bayli Blanchard added six points and six rebounds for Deer Creek. Vann made 6 of 13 shots, but her teammates made 3 of 27.

Janee Arnold had 16 points, seven steals and six rebounds and Sharayla Brown added 12 points and seven blocks for East Central, but no one else scored.

The game was tied at 23 at the end of regulation.

Neither team scored in double digits in any quarter. The squads combined to make just 21 of 89 shots from the field. Deer Creek outrebounded East Central 44-32 to make up for its 21 turnovers.

Deer Creek joined Fort Gibson, in Class 4A, as repeat champions in 2014. This is Deer Creek's fifth girls hoops title in school history.
