VIAN - The Vian Wolverines got a big defensive game from Londell Taylor and a big offensive output by Phillip Wright to pull off a 67-57 upset of No. 6-ranked Keys at Ray Jordan Fieldhouse Tuesday night. The Lady Cougars had better luck with three players scoring in double figures to top the Lady Wolverines 54-41.

The Lady Cougars (14-6, 9-3) were led by Rachel Blankenship with 17 points, while Lyndsey Lawrence and Tabitha Lawrence added 15 and 12 points respectively.

Head Coach Lisa Burton’s Lady Cougars got off to a good start, leading the Lady Wolverines (6-14, 2-10) 16-9 after one period.

The usual stingy defense of the Lady Cougars was hitting on all cylinders, as Vian was held to single digits in the first two periods.

The Keys offense was clicking as well with the Lady Cougars falling just one point short of their first period output with a 15-9 second eight minutes.

With a 31-18 lead at the half, all Keys had to do was take care of the ball in the final half. The Lady Cougars did just that, although they had to battle through a mild Vian rally that saw the Lady Wolverines claw back to within nine at 38-29 heading into the final stanza.

Keys put the game away with a 16-12 fourth period. With the win, the Lady Cougars completed a season sweep of the Lady Wolverines.

In the boys game, the Wolverines used their home court advantage to shock Head Coach Duane Jones’ Cougars who had only lost two games, both to Big Eight Conference champion Boynton, this season.

Keys (17-3, 10-3) fell behind 17-11 at the end of one period, a surprising score for the typically stout Cougars defense.

Vian was able to create turnovers and had success shutting down Keys 3-point expert Zach McIntosh with an aggressive perimeter defense.

The Cougars rallied to cut the deficit to three at 33-30 at the half, but the Wolverines gave themselves a little breathing room with a 13-11 third that gave Keys a 46-41 hill to climb in the fourth.

Vian made sure that wouldn’t happen, outscoring the Cougars 21-16 in the final stanza to set the final score of 67-57.

The Cougars and Lady Cougars will play their final regular season home game Friday night against Gore. A road trip to Okay on Valentine’s Day will end the regular season.

Keys will be hosting Henryetta in the Class 3A District playoffs on Saturday, Feb. 18.
