The Oklahoma Mission of Mercy recently announced the final numbers from its 10th annual event in Oklahoma City, where Oklahoma Dental Association members and Tahlequah resident Dr. Robert Webb were among the dental professionals who donated services.
The two-day free dental clinic for individuals of all ages provided $1,512,266 in donated dental care. These donated treatments included cleanings, fillings extractions, root canals on front teeth and additional ways to improve the smile line at no cost to patients. Volunteers performed dental procedures for 1,684 patients, averaging $898 of donated dental care per patient.
"Because of all of our sponsors and volunteers, we can provide the highest quality of dental care to our patients year after year," said the Oklahoma Dental Association President Dr. Shannon Griffin. "It was amazing how we were able to come together and help those lined up for this year's OkMOM event. Our aim is not only to alleviate people's dental pain but to also prioritize oral health and connect patients with a dentist for ongoing preventive care."
It took a record-breaking 1,970 volunteers from around the state to make this year's Oklahoma Mission of Mercy successful. This event is the single largest free clinic in the state where dental professionals come together for two days and offer their services for free.
"The Oklahoma Mission of Mercy is the only option for some to receive dental care. About half of Oklahomans do not have dental insurance and many have tremendous barriers to care," said Delta Dental of Oklahoma President and CEO John Gladden. "This event would not be possible without thousands of Oklahoma dental professionals and volunteers giving their time and services to change peoples' lives."
Each year the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy offers the clinic in a different city. The 2020 event will be held in Stillwater Feb. 7-8.
