SALLISAW – Two Sequoyah County men, one charged with rape and sexual battery were sentenced to prison this week in Sequoyah County District Court.

District Attorney Richard L. Gray said John Earl Finney, 24, and Andrew R. Qualls, 33, were sentenced after pleading guilty to their charges.

Finney, of Roland, pleaded guilty to rape by instrumentation and sexual battery and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He must receive sex offender therapy and, upon release, will be required to register as a sex offender. The charges stem from a July 2, 2005 incident in which Finney molested two teenage girls while he was visiting with the family of one of the girls.

Qualls, of Vian, pleaded guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and a second offense domestic abuse charge and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Qualls will be allowed to participate in a regimented drug program while in the Department of Corrections. The charges stem from a Dec. 11, 2005 incident where Qualls injected the victim, Mary Stevens, with a diabetic syringe that caused Stevens to go into an insulin overdose. Qualls had been on probation for a prior offense at the time this occurred.

Stevens has a valid protective order against Qualls, court records show.

“I have absolutely no tolerance for such violent and heinous crimes and will do all I can to make sure justice is dealt out,” Gray said.
