A July 6 arraignment is set for a Cherokee County woman charged with failing to report the sexual abuse of her 3-year-old  granddaughter.

Court records show Betsy Holden, 50, is to appear at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, before Associate District Judge Mark Dobbins. Holden was formally charged Friday with one count of failing to report sexual abuse, a misdemeanor.

Prosecutors allege Holden didn’t get medical attention for the child or report her abuse to the Department of Human Services.

The victim’s mother, Emily Lynn Smith, was jailed last week for child endangerment.

DA Investigator Katie Bateman said Smith, 22, knew about her daughter’s injuries for three weeks before taking her to the hospital for medical treatment.

Two physicians have examined the girl and determined she was sexually abused.

Bateman said the girl, Smith, and Holden have also been through a forensic interview. Formal charges have not been filed against Smith. Holden was arrested when she was at the Cherokee County Detention Center visiting her daughter.

Assistant District Attorney B.J. Baker is prosecuting the case.
