CHEROKEE LANDING – An investigation is continuing into a near drowning that occurred Monday at Cherokee Landing State Park.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Charley Batt said the victim, a 17-year-old boy from Coweta, was swimming near a buoy in the swimming area at Cherokee Landing when he grew tired and went underwater. Batt said it appears the youth was under water for about 10 minutes.

Witnesses jumped in and rescued the victim. A nurse was at the scene and administered CPR until emergency medical services personnel arrived and transported him from the scene. Batt said the youth is now at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

Witnesses have given investigating troopers varying stories as to how the incident occurred. Batt said troopers are looking for additional witnesses to interview.

Batt is working the incident with OHP Troopers Gordon Chronister, Mike Sherman and OHP Lt. Greg Giles.
