Search and rescue personnel pulled the body of a woman from the waters of Lake Tenkiller Monday after a vehicle was seen plunging in from State Highway 82 south, near Cherokee Landing State Park.

Keys Fire Chief Jeff McCarty said witnesses reported that the vehicle went off the highway and over a cliff before it landed in the water just east of Oklahoma Station, on the south side of the highway. Witnesses also told investigators they had seen at least one person in the vehicle.

McCarty said it appeared as if the vehicle struck the bank and flipped into about 30 feet of water.

Dive teams from the Cherokee Nation and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded for recovery efforts. Callers reported the crash at about 1 p.m.

Authorities with the OHP had not released the victim’s name or other details of the investigation as of press time Monday evening, but first responders who were on the scene said a body was recovered before the vehicle was pulled out of the water Monday afternoon.
