MUSKOGEE – With the track back in action last week, Thunderbird Speedway moves into the two-day special Friday and Saturday –  hosting the fifth Annual Harold Leep Classic. This special AMERI-FLEX / OCRS sprint car event will have a complete program for the sprint cars with heat races, semi mains, and the main event. 

Over $20,000 is up for the taking for this year’s Leep Classic (based on a 30-car field). 

One of Harold Leep’s race cars was one called “The Missile.” That car will be on display for race fans to see up close and the car will make some laps during intermission. Several members of the Leep family are expected to be in attendance.   

Friday  will see the sprints run a 20-lap main event on the 1/2-mile oval. Saturday’s main event will be 25 laps. 

Previous winners in the Leep Classic, named after the famed local racer who excelled in virtually every dirt track category there is over a 33-year career, was Sheldon Barksdale in 2018, Jamie Passmore at Caney Valley in 2017. Zach Chappell at Outlaw Motor Speedway in 2016 and Whit Gastineau at Outlaw in 2015. Three of those are in the current top four in the OCRS standings. Chappell is the current points leader with Andrew Deal second, Barksdale third and Gastineau fourth. Jase Randolph rounds out the top five.

In addition, the regular divisions of A Modifieds, B Modifieds and Factory Stock run Friday. B Mods, Super Stock and Factory Stock run Saturday.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and grandstands at 5:30 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 8. Cost is $15 for grandstands, kids 10-under are free. Pit passes are $35.

On Saturday, hot laps and racing begin one hour earlier. 

Thunderbird Speedway is at 1444 S. Cherokee St.
