While not set in stone, the proposed districts are out for next season when the Tahlequah High School football team drops down to 5A.

If the districts are approved by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association, the Tigers would embark on the 2008-09 season by being in 5A-4, the same district as Ada, Coweta, McAlester, Stilwell, Tulsa Central, Tulsa East Central and Tulsa Edison.

“It won’t become official until the eighth of next month,” THS athletic director Randy Underwood said. “At the meeting, one of the things mentioned was coaches coming to some kind of agreement to work this out. There were a couple of coaches that weren’t there, but for the most part, all of the coaches were there.”

While the vote on Aug. 8 should be nothing more than a technicality, if the districts are approved as is, the Tigers already have their football schedule made up around the district.

They would have road games against Claremore, Tulsa Central, Tulsa Edison, Ada and Tulsa East Central.

They would have home games against Sallisaw, Coweta, Stilwell and McAlister.

Catoosa is also on the schedule, but it has yet to be determined whether they would be a home game or a road game.

“I think it’s worked out for what’s fair,” Underwood said. “You know East Central is going to get respect and Ada has won 28 state championships in football over the years.”

Future rival Stilwell would be joining the Tigers in the new district.

Its schedule would include games against Roland, Sallisaw, Muldrow, Tahlequah, East Central, McAlester, Ada, Coweta, Tulsa Edison and Tulsa Central.

Stilwell is moving up to 5A from 4A.
