TULSA - The Sequoyah Indians of head coach Larry Grigg knew that there would be a learning curve heading into the 2005-’06 season. A lot of talent was graduated last May, but a good nucleus returned, the Indians just needed some seasoning. They got that in December and now look more than ready to challenge for another gold ball after winning their fifth game in a row Friday night, 63-54 over the Tulsa Metro Christian Patriots.

The Indians were able to do what they do best, hit 3-pointers offensively, while playing a smothering defense to force turnovers.

Sequoyah took a 15-10 lead after one period, thanks to the shooting of senior T.J. Hooper and Lance Soap.

Metro battled back in the second, taking a 26-25 lead with 31 seconds to play in the half.

Sequoyah ran the clock down for the final shot, where Mike Soap connected on a 3-pointer to put the Indians ahead at the half - and for good - 28-26.

Mike Soap’s three, his second of the period, came with four seconds left before intermission.

The inside and outside threat of Hooper, who plays much larger in the paint than his 5-foot-9 frame would indicate, gave him a game high 19 points.

Aiding the cause was Lance Soap, who contributed 13 points of his own, but most importantly, dished off eight assists as the Indians pulled away in the third.

Sequoyah had played well in the Tournament of Champions the final week of 2005. Despite two losses at the prestigious tournament, the Indians gained valuable experience and confidence that helped them put the game away on a hostile Metro Christian home court.

Sequoyah outscored the Patriots 21-13 in the third, taking a 49-41 advantage into the final eight minutes.

The Patriots tried to battle back, but the Indians always had an answer to any Metro rally.

The Indians (9-5) sank eight 3-pointers on the night.

Sequoyah will take a trip over the state line into Fayetteville on Tuesday to battle Fayetteville Christian. The Indians will face Boynton-Moton on Thursday night at the Muskogee Civic Assembly Center.
