ADA – Northeastern State won the opener of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with East Central, 7-5 before falling in the nightcap 19-15 in Ada.
The RiverHawks are now 14-18 overall and 12-14 in LSC play, while the Tigers are 4-17 and 4-14 in league action.
Chris Gallegos led NSU’s 10-hit attack by going 2-for-4 at the plate, which included 3 RBI’s, and a two-run home run in the seventh.
Trailing 5-3 entering the seventh inning, Northeastern State rallied for four runs to get the victory. Erick McKinney plated two runs for the RiverHawks with his fourth home run of the season. McKinney’s shot over the center field wall scored Chris Sprick, who had reached safely on a base hit, to tie the game at 5-all.
Then with two outs, Angel Hernandez drew a walk and Gallegos followed with a 2-run home run over the left center field fence for the 7-5 RiverHawks’ victory.
Josh Walker picked up the victory for the RiverHawks his third of the season in relief. Will Grimes went the distance for the Tigers.
East Central 19, NSU 15
The second game was a slugfest with the two teams combining for 39 base hits, 15 for the RiverHawks and 24 for the Tigers.
ECU jumped out to a 6-1 lead over the RiverHawks before NSU struck for 9 runs in the fourth inning for a 10-6 lead. The RiverHawks used 7 base hits and one ECU error for the nine runs. However, the lead was short lived as the Tigers scored 7 runs over the next two innings before NSU scored in the sixth slicing the Tiger lead to 12-11.
East Central regained the lead in the last of the sixth with four runs and a 17-11 lead. NSU came back with 3 runs in the 8th inning narrowing the ECU margin to 17-15. But the Tigers added to their total with 2 more runs in the 8th for the 1`9-15 final.
Northeastern State’s Michael Houser took the loss and is now 1-2 for the year. Houser was one of four pitchers to see action for the RiverHawks.
Taylor Clark led the NSU hitting attack with four hits, followed by Greg Jackson; Brandon Espinal collected three hits each.
