Staying Fit for life

Northeastern State University RiverHawks Wellness Center, also known as The Fit, offers classes even when students are away for the summer.

Fitness classes such as Aqua Aerobics, Ball & Weights and more are designed for all skill levels.

One class, called Train Like an Athlete, focuses on challenging its participants. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.

"It's more like a cardio and agility class," said Dayton Bowlin, NSU Fit student staff member. "We do all kinds of running drills with ladders, sleds and stuff like that. It's pretty much a full-body workout."

Bowlin participates in multiple classes to improve his own physical fitness, including the yoga class, offered Monday through Thursday.

"It's mainly constructed for fitness, but I like to include a little bit of traditional yoga," said former yoga instructor Brianna Cook. "That includes hand signs and a meditation at the end."

The class is primarily directed at participating students, but there are some attendees who are not students and utilize the class.

Cook graduated from NSU in May and no longer works as the gym's yoga instructor, but other students have filled in to continue what she started.

"To me, yoga is important because it gives people the opportunity to come in and experience something that you don't get a lot of exposure to in your day-to-day life," said Cook. "It gives people time to meet with themselves. A lot of people don't take the time or know how to get that moment of inward reflection in their day."

The yoga class meets every Monday and Wednesday, 5:30-6:20 p.m., and every Tuesday and Thursday, 12:15-12:45 p.m.

These classes, along with all other classes on The Fit summer schedule, are included with every gym membership.

NSU Fit's summer hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m. on Monday-Thursday; 6 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

"It's never too late to better yourself," said Bowlin. "We do everything we can here to help you reach your goals."
